Alright, time to move on down the timeline. Zooooooom! And we have arrived. We are in the city of Ur. Ur is a large city-state where we will meet a pretty important person. Let us see. Sheep, camel, more sheep, a goat. Baaaaa! Oh there he is! The man who we were looking for. His name is Abram but soon enough he will become the famous man Abraham. Now, like all of us, Abram was a sinner. Abram grew up where people had polytheism. Polytheism is a big word that means many beliefs. You see, poly means many and theism means belief so put it together and it means many beliefs. And although God doesn't need to use us, He chooses to. Abram had a wife named Sarai whose name would later be changed to Sarah who is also famous. The name Sarah means 'princess' and the name Abraham means 'father of many'. Abram and Sarai didn't have any children even though they wanted to. But God had a different plan.
So God told Abram to go to a place He would lead him. This was a very difficult thing for Abram since this was where his family and friends were. Plus, he didn't even know where he was going. Yet, even though Abram didn't know where he was going, he knows who leads him there. So off they go. They pack up and begin their journey. They finally reach Haran where Abram's father dies and they must keep going. After a long time, they reach Canaan. Alright, so now they are in their new home, but what about being the father and mother of many? Slow down, I am getting to that. Great, now they are in the land. But Abram and Sarai were even older now, how could they have children? By that time Abram was about 75 and Sarai was 65. Still God told them to be patient. Years and years later, when Abram was about 99 years old and Sarai was about 89 years old, God talked to Abram. He told him that from then on, his name would be Abraham meaning "Father of many". God also told him that his wife Sarai's new name would be Sarah meaning princess or noblewoman. Yay! We found out their names! But what about being the father and mother of many?! Hold your horses, we are getting there!
Soon, 3 messengers from heaven came to see Abraham. He bowed at their feet and asked Sarah to bring them some meet and cheese and milk. While they ate, they talked and one of the messengers told Abraham that in a year, Sarah would have a son. Sarah who was listening in their tent, laughed at this thought about having a son at her age. However, the messenger knew of her giggles and asked why she had laughed. Sarah admitted that she laughed because it was hard to believe that she would have a son at her age. But the messenger told her that she would indeed have a son. The three messengers left and skipping ahead a year, God did give Abraham and Sarah a son. They named the son Isaac, meaning laughter. And soon, Isaac's descendants grew and became the nation of Israel.
Hooray! God fulfilled His promises! Abraham became the father of faith since he trusted God and had faith in Him for all of the years. And guess what? God will keep His promises to us! He always knows what is best for us and we can trust Him with everything. Whoops! It is time to go down the timeline! Bye Abraham! Bye Sarah! Bye Isaac! Come on! Whooosh!
